Scaffolding is one of those education terms that sounds more complicated than it is. In practice it describes something most good teachers do instinctively: guiding a child to the edge of what they can do, and then a little further, providing just enough support to make the next step possible, then gradually stepping back as confidence builds.
The concept comes from the psychologist Lev Vygotsky, who introduced the idea of the Zone of Proximal Development. The zone is the space between what a child can do independently and what they can do with guidance. According to Vygotsky, this is where the most productive learning happens right at the edge of current ability, not on familiar ground (which produces boredom) and not on territory so challenging it becomes demoralising. The role of the teacher, the platform, or the tutor is to hold a child in that zone as it moves.
Without scaffolding, 11+ practice tends to go one of two ways. A child ploughing through questions that are too easy for them is drilling rather than learning: they may get every answer right, but they're not improving. A child confronted repeatedly with questions that are well beyond them is likely to disengage entirely. Neither extreme is efficient, and both are surprisingly common when preparation relies on fixed workbooks or static question banks that can't respond to the individual.

Good tutors do this intuitively. They know when to offer a hint and when to hold back. They can read the difference between a child who is productively struggling and one who has hit a wall. Replicating that digitally is not perfectly possible, and a tutor brings things a platform never will, but an adaptive system that tracks every response and adjusts accordingly gets closer than a static workbook ever could.
