Verbal Reasoning confuses children not because it's harder than Maths, but because the question types are genuinely unfamiliar. Most children have never seen a 'move a letter' question or a letter series before they begin 11+ preparation. That unfamiliarity is fixable, and fixing it systematically is what separates children who improve quickly from those who plateau.
The first step is understanding the landscape. There are around 21 recognised Verbal Reasoning question types, and confusion at the type level is one of the biggest wastes of practice time. A child who doesn't yet know what a hidden word question is asking will spend valuable time trying to work out the rules rather than applying them. An early priority, even before drilling any specific type, should be working through each one at least briefly so that no question in the actual exam comes as a complete surprise.
The most commonly tested question types are worth the most focused attention. Synonyms and antonyms are among the most frequent, closely connected to vocabulary, which we cover separately in our guide to building vocabulary for the 11+. Analogies test the relationship between word pairs and reward children who can articulate precisely how two things are connected. Compound words, odd word out, and closest meaning questions all appear regularly across both GL and CEM papers.
Systematic practice consistently outperforms random practice. Work through one question type at a time until your child can handle it reliably, then move to the next. Mixing too many types together too early, before any individual type is secure, creates a kind of cognitive noise that slows progress. Once most types are individually solid, mixed practice is valuable because it replicates exam conditions. But that comes later.
Letter and number sequence questions are worth addressing directly because children often find them the most alien. They're logic puzzles dressed in letters, and the key insight is that the same pattern-recognition skills used in number sequences apply here too. Alphabetical steps, moving forward or backward by a fixed amount, are the most common pattern. Vowel and consonant alternation is another. Position-based codes, where a letter's position in the sequence determines the rule, appear in more advanced papers. Spend time making the underlying logic explicit rather than hoping the pattern becomes obvious through repetition alone.
Number code questions follow a similar principle. A word is encoded into numbers, and the child must decode another word or encode a new one using the same logic. The approach is systematic: match each known letter to its number, build up the key, apply it. Children who try to hold the whole code in their head struggle; children who write it down step by step rarely do.
Speed matters, but it should come second to understanding. Once your child reliably gets a question type right with unlimited time, that's the moment to introduce a gentle clock. Automaticity, the ability to apply a method without consciously thinking through it, is what exam conditions require, and it only develops after the method itself is solid. Rushing the timing before the method is secure is one of the more common preparation mistakes.
