Independent schools vary enormously — in size, culture, ethos, academic rigour, and cost. Grouping them together as a single category is a bit like grouping all restaurants together: technically accurate, practically not very useful. Some are ancient institutions with enormous endowments and famous alumni; others are small, local, and focused on something specific. The decision to consider one should really start not with "should we go independent?" but with "what does this particular school actually offer, and is it worth what we'd pay for it?"
The most consistently genuine advantage of independent schools is class size. State schools typically have 28 to 32 pupils per class; independent schools commonly have 16 to 22, sometimes fewer at senior level. That difference in teacher-to-pupil ratio has real, practical effects. A teacher who has 18 children rather than 30 can identify when one of them has a gap in understanding far sooner, give more individual feedback, and adapt their approach in the moment. Many independent schools invest heavily in facilities and curriculum breadth that state schools, operating under tighter budgets, often can't match. Strong music departments with professional-level instruments and regular performances, well-funded sports programmes with coaching across a wide range of activities, drama studios, art facilities, regular trips — these are genuinely common in independent schools in a way they aren't across the state sector as a whole. If these things matter to your child, they're worth asking about specifically rather than assuming they're present just because the fees are high.
Pastoral care is another area where independent schools often — though not always — have an advantage. Smaller communities tend to mean staff know children better. A form tutor who has twelve pupils, sees them every day, and will follow them across their school career is in a different position from one managing a large form group who rotates each year. Whether a school actually delivers good pastoral care is something you have to investigate directly; it doesn't follow automatically from small size or high fees. But the structural conditions are often more favourable.
On entry and preparation: most selective independent schools run their own entrance exams at 11+ or 13+, set by the school itself. Some use GL Assessment for some or all papers. Over seven years from Year 7 to Year 13, day fees alone could amount to £84,000 to £175,000 — before uniform, trips, music lessons, or any other extras. Bursaries and scholarships exist and are sometimes substantial, but they are competitive and often means-tested. Some families who are eligible for significant bursaries never find out because they assume they wouldn't qualify — it's always worth asking. But run the actual numbers before you fall in love with a school. Financial strain that builds over a decade is a real thing, and it affects families in ways that spill over into everything else.
Is it worth it? The honest answer is: it depends on the school, the child, and what matters to your family. Outcomes at top independent schools are strong, but they are broadly comparable to selective state schools when you account for intake. The differential is often more in the experience — the breadth of opportunity, the environment, the pastoral support — than in where pupils end up at eighteen. For some families, that experience is worth an enormous amount. For others, the same money invested differently would serve their child better. Neither answer is wrong.
When you visit a school — and you should visit before making any decisions — there are a few things particularly worth asking. What is the average class size, not in the prospectus but in practice? How does the bursary fund actually work, and what is the typical level of award? What happens when a child struggles academically or pastorally — is the support internal or do families need to arrange it externally? And what proportion of pupils continue to the sixth form? A high sixth form retention rate usually signals that pupils are genuinely happy and thriving, not just enrolled.
Whatever you decide, the 11+ preparation process is largely the same starting point. Independent schools and grammar schools test the same core subjects — Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning — and a child who builds strong foundations in all four will be well-placed for either.
