Why We Built Onzely

April 2026 · The Onzely Team

It started, as these things often do, with a realisation we weren't quite ready for. Our child was coming to the end of Year 4 when it fully landed: the 11+ was on the horizon. Not immediately, not urgently, but soon enough that we needed to think about it. The feelings that came with that were complicated. Genuine excitement about what it could open up, but also a quiet pressure we hadn't anticipated. We wanted to give our child every chance without turning the next two years into something they'd look back on with dread.

So we did what most parents do. We bought workbooks. Several of them. We downloaded apps. We signed up to websites with question banks. And we ran into the same problems, one after another. The workbooks ran out. The apps felt like digital versions of the same paper-and-pencil drilling, just on a screen. Nothing adapted to where our child actually was. Nothing explained a wrong answer in a way a nine-year-old could understand. And nothing made our child actually want to sit down and do it. After a week of reluctant sessions at the kitchen table, we could see this approach wasn't going to hold up for two years.

We believed technology could do something a workbook simply can't. It can watch. It can adjust. It can notice when a child is finding something too easy and push them forward, and it can notice when they're struggling and slow down. It can explain a wrong answer in plain language, not a model answer written for an adult, but a real explanation for a nine-year-old. And it can make progress feel tangible. A child who earns XP, levels up and unlocks something is a child who comes back tomorrow.

We set out to build something around three goals. First, inspire your child to actually want to practise. Second, educate them properly rather than just drilling answers. And third, motivate them through real progress rather than parental pressure. We wanted a child who finished a session feeling good about themselves, not worn down. Something that served them not just for the 11+, but for the habits of learning it would build long after.

Onzely is in beta right now. Real families are using it, and we're improving it every week based on what we hear from them. There are features we still want to build, subjects we want to go deeper on. But the core of what we set out to make is there: adaptive practice that never runs out of questions, AI-powered explanations for every wrong answer, and a system that makes a child feel rewarded for the effort they put in.

If you're reading this, you're probably somewhere near the start of the same journey we were on. We'd love you to try Onzely and tell us honestly how it works for your family. This was built for families like ours, and what we hear from real parents is what shapes everything we do next.
